Massage After Injury

Massage after InjuryMassage after Injury – How Long Should You Wait?

You may have already heard that Registered Massage Therapy can help you after some injuries. You strain your back while lifting something heavy, sprain your ankle while running, or maybe you’re in a car accident and only suspect you might be injured. Should you wait to get a massage or take care of it immediately? The decision you make can have a lasting impact.

First Things First

When you have a serious acute injury, it’s critical that you see your doctor right away. If you’re bleeding profusely or seem to have a broken bone, seeing a doctor first is the most logical choice. Even if you don’t have any obvious external injuries, it may be important to go to a doctor to make sure you don’t have internal bleeding or other injuries that might not be obvious to you. Once your doctor assesses your condition, they can clear you to get help from a Registered Massage Therapist.

Why Sooner Is Better Than Later

When you’re injured suddenly, your body reacts by trying to protect you. This can lead to pain, muscle tension, and muscle spasms. You may have compressed nerves, and trigger points may have developed. Relaxing your muscles and freeing up the movement in your joints early on can help you feel better sooner and avoid the condition becoming chronic.

When Is It Too Late to Get a Massage?

What about old injuries? Will massage still help? Yes, in many cases, it will help tremendously.  Even if you were injured many months or even years ago, massage therapy treatments may improve your condition and relieve chronic stiffness and pain. Your massage therapist works to release old adhesions and reduce scar tissue, improving the circulation in the tissues and the flexibility in your joints.

How Can I Be Sure?

It isn’t always easy to know when it’s the right time to get a massage after an injury. Whether your doctor treats you or doesn’t need to do so, you may not know how soon to go for a massage. The best thing you can do in those situations is to consult with a Registered Massage Therapist.

Our Davie Village RMTs are highly trained massage professionals who can give you sound guidance about when and what kind of massage is right for you. Then, you can get started as soon as possible and potentially avoid long-term damage.

Good advice! As a licensed massage therapist in the USA I agree wholeheartedly with you! Depending on each clients situation I too do what’s best for them. I had a client that got out of the hospital one day and demanded a massage that day ..I denied her. Better to be safe than sorry !
