What is a Pregnancy Massage?
Also known as a prenatal massage, a pregnancy massage is a treatment designed for both new mothers and mothers-to-be here in Vancouver to relieve the aches, pains, and swelling that are often experienced while carrying a child as well as after. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, different approaches and patient positioning are used to address your specific needs, concerns, and to ensure you are comfortable throughout the treatment. The most common method for a prenatal massage is to incorporate Swedish massage techniques since they are gentler, use lighter pressure, and increase overall muscle relaxation, one of the many benefits for those who are experiencing a lot of general discomfort pre or post delivery.
In the first trimester of pregnancy, expecting mothers are usually able to lay face down comfortably during their treatment. Once the baby bump becomes more pronounced in the second and third trimester and laying face-down is uncomfortable, the treatment may be done entirely in a side-lying position or face-up position. If the mother wishes to lay on her stomach, a pregnancy pillow may be used to take pressure off of the stomach and support the body to prevent discomfort.
A prenatal massage is helpful in addressing the following conditions:
- Sore joints
- Swollen ankles
- Muscle tension
- Lower back pain
- Neck pain
- Shoulder pain
- Trouble sleeping
Is massage therapy during pregnancy safe?
It is always important to consult with your doctor before booking treatments to ensure that a pregnancy massage is the right choice for your prenatal care routine. A common misconception is that massages during pregnancy are not safe, however, the opposite is true for pregnancies that are considered normal and not classified as high-risk. It is a great way to feel relief from the discomforts of pre-and-post giving birth, making it a great gift for new mothers and mothers-to-be who could use some well-deserved self-care.
